Available mesh sizes and cable diameters
The choice of mesh size and cable diameter determines the appearance, transparency, strength and weight of the cable mesh. Smaller meshes create a denser look, while larger meshes provide more openness and a lighter overall result.
The table below gives an overview of the standard combinations that are often used. Other executions can be assessed on a project basis.

Technical explanation

For stainless steel cable mesh, the mesh size is usually shown as SD × LD.
SD stands for the short diagonal of the mesh.
LD stands for the long diagonal of the mesh.
All dimensions are measured from centre to centre of the cables.
When the cable mesh is opened at an angle of approximately 60°, it creates a good balance between strength, flexibility and appearance. In this position, the short diagonal is equal to the mesh side.
This ratio ensures that the cable mesh is evenly loaded, can be tensioned neatly and forms a regular pattern. That is why this geometry is often used.
Depending on the shape, application or technical requirements of your project, this ratio can be adjusted.
Weight per m² of stainless steel cable mesh
The weight of stainless steel cable mesh depends on the mesh size and cable diameter. Smaller meshes and thicker cables result in a higher weight per m². Larger meshes and finer cables create a lighter and more transparent mesh.
The table below shows the theoretical weight per m² of stainless steel cable mesh in AISI 316. It is intended as a guideline for estimating the self-weight and the load on the supporting structure.
Please keep in mind that cable mesh is installed under tension in order to remain tightly stretched. The supporting structure must therefore be sufficiently strong and stable to safely absorb these forces.

Optimal cable diameter for stainless steel cable mesh: strength, safety and efficiency
Different cable diameters are used for stainless steel cable mesh, depending on the desired appearance, load and application.
Ø 1.5 mm is often chosen when a fine, lightweight and highly transparent mesh is required.
Ø 2.0 mm is the best standard choice for many projects, as this diameter offers a good balance between safety, durability, transparency and cost.
The difference between the diameters is greater than it may appear at first sight.
A Ø 2.0 mm cable has approximately 78% more breaking load than a Ø 1.5 mm cable. A Ø 3.0 mm cable has more than double the breaking load of a Ø 2.0 mm cable, and a Ø 4.0 mm cable reaches approximately four times the breaking load of a Ø 2.0 mm cable.
This is because the strength of a cable does not increase linearly, but is related to the cross-section of the cable:
A = π · d² / 4
A limited increase in diameter therefore already results in a clear increase in load-bearing capacity.
For comparison:
Ø 1.5 mm → approx. 1.37 kN breaking load
Ø 2.0 mm → approx. 2.44 kN breaking load
Ø 3.0 mm → approx. 5.48 kN breaking load
Ø 4.0 mm → approx. 9.76 kN breaking load
For higher safety requirements, larger impact loads, intensive use or specific standards, Ø 3.0 mm, Ø 4.0 mm or other diameters can be used.

| Cable diameter | Constr- uction | Breaking load +- | Typical application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ø 1,5 mm | 7×7 | ± 1,37 kN | Finer meshes and light-duty applications. |
| Ø 2,0 mm | 7×7 | ± 2,44 kN | Commonly used choice for balustrades, safety nets and transparent screening. |
| Ø 3,0 mm | 7×7 | ± 5,48 kN | For higher loads and more robust applications. |
| Ø 4,0 mm | 7×7 | ± 9.76 kN | For heavy-duty or specific custom applications. |
Why choose AISI 316 stainless steel for cable mesh?
For our cable mesh and steel nets, we use AISI 316 stainless steel. This material is particularly suitable for cable mesh that needs to remain strong, safe and low-maintenance for many years, both indoors and outdoors.
AISI 316 stainless steel offers high resistance to corrosion and weathering. This makes it a logical choice for applications such as balustrades, bridges, public infrastructure, green façades, animal enclosures and aviaries.
The material retains its strength and appearance, even when exposed to rain, moisture, temperature differences and intensive use.

Edge finish with or without eyelets
Stainless steel cable mesh can be finished in different ways, depending on the application, fixing method and desired installation approach.

As standard, our cable mesh is supplied without eyelets. For many projects, this is the simplest and cleanest execution.
When the installation or design requires it, the cable mesh can also be fitted with eyelets along the edge. These eyelets make it possible to fix, suspend or guide the mesh in a specific way around a tube, frame or supporting structure.
The choice of an edge finish with or without eyelets depends on the design, the supporting structure and the way in which the cable mesh will be installed. We will be happy to look at which execution is most suitable for your project.
Coloured and black cable mesh
Cable mesh can be supplied in natural stainless steel, with a coating in the desired colour or with black oxidised stainless steel cables.
This allows the cable mesh to better match the architecture, the supporting structure or the surrounding environment.
A coloured finish can allow the mesh to blend subtly into the design or, on the contrary, make it stand out. Black oxidised cables provide a dark, matt and less reflective appearance.
